Laikipia Wilderness
Laikipia, Kenya
A low-key, family-focused camp in northern Laikipia that provides a peaceful retreat in a beautiful spot of Kenya.

Price
Ksh 20,000 pp, sharing, full-board, inc some drinks. Children under 5 go free. Conservancy fee included in price.
Strengths
Hosted by Steve and Annabelle Carey, this camp has a more intimate feel than many, and it feels a little like being welcomed into a family home, whether by the Careys, or friends standing in. The lodge offers an adventurous, family-friendly experience, with a range of activities from youngsters to adults, including swimming in the river, rafting and bushcraft. There is a tagged wild dog population, making the likelihood of a sighting of these unusual creatures quite high.
Weaknesses
Given its location, the wildlife viewing is not as plentiful as in the national parks. Nevertheless, you’re likely to be rewarded with sightings of most game, including elephant, but big cats might be more elusive.
Style and character
This is a small, intimate bush camp, consisting of just five tents. Guests dine communally, but have their itineraries tailor-made, whether it’s activity-based, fly-camping or a nighttime game drive.
Location
Laikipia Wilderness is situated on a large wildlife conservancy about a five-hour drive from Nairobi. Access for the last hour or so is along a marram road.
Service & Facilities
Service is very competent, and the guides experienced. Tea and cake is served up mid-afternoon before going out on a game drive, with plentiful drink and food to go round when you get back.
- Wifi (available on request)
Rooms
Accommodation is in airy, light tents, and for families, there is an adjoining second tent with twin beds. All of the rooms are tastefully furnished, and each has a small veranda, and outdoor (ensuite) bathroom.
Food & Drink
Food is tasty and fresh, and alcoholic beverages are included in the cost up to a value of Ksh 1,500.
Value for Money?
Steep at Ksh 20,000 per resident adult when compared to similar properties. On the upside, however, a large number of activities are included in that cost.
Family Friendly?
A great place for kids, particularly those with an adventurous bent. Activities include walking, rock climbing, looking for bugs and scorpions, fishing, rafting, swimming in the river, and making bows and arrows and bushcraft. Kids’ tea can be taken along for a sundowner, allowing kids to eat and doze on the way home without compromising the parents’ ability to enjoy an evening game drive.
