President Kenyatta condemns shooting of Laikipia conservationist Kuki Gallmann

President Uhuru Kenyatta has condemned the shooting of Laikipia Nature Conservancy Director Kuki Gallmann.

Gallmann was shot and wounded by raiders at her ranch on Sunday in the latest attack by herders as pressure for pasture in the drought-stricken region continues.

The 73-year-old author of the memoir I dreamed of Africa was shot in the stomach after the vehicle she was driving in was ambushed by a group of gunmen, according to a family friend. She was airlifted to Nairobi for medical attention.

Gallmann was going to inspect fresh damage to her property after invaders burned down a retreat on Saturday, barely a month after her luxury hotel was burnt down.

In a statement sent to media houses by his spokesperson Manoah Esipisu, President Kenyatta warned politicians against inciting locals in Laikipia to invade privately-owned property saying the law with deal with anyone linked to the attacks.

Her daughter, who was shot at a similar attack in March, said Kuki was in a stable condition and was able to speak.

The family owns the 100,000-acre Laikipia Nature Conservancy and has employed over 250 Kenyans on luxury lodges, ranch and other businesses on the land.

They also run the Gallmann Africa Conservancy and Gallmann Memorial Foundation.
