With my luggage left in Nairobi (thanks KQ!), my welcome to Zanzibar was quite interesting. I spent my first day in Stone town, staying at the beautiful Werere House, five minutes away from the famous Forodhani Gardens.
Walking through Forodhani is quite the spectacle from street food being sold in the open stalls to the local boys, competing to dive. It’s a must-see experience when in Stone Town.
Day 1
Day 1Fast forward to Christmas Day, I head out to Nungwi beach to hookup with the rest of the Sail n Sound crew at Sunset Bungalows. It’s about an hour’s drive to Nungwi and it’s an exciting trip seeing the Zanzibar countryside. Nungwi is home to Kendra beach, surely one of the best beaches in the world. I’m welcomed by Taye, the founder of Sail n Sound, and we head out to our first activity – swimming with Turtles at Bahari Turtle Bay, a well-known conservation site. It’s quite an experience swimming with turtles and capturing amazing moments with fellow travellers, Capital FM Lifestyle Editor Susan Wong and photographer Mutua Matheka. Later on, we have dinner by the beach and wait for Brymo, one of Nigeria’s top artists, to perform. A powerful voice and performer, he works the crowd with hit after hit.
Day 2
My sail experience begins today as we head out aboard The Wizard. The deep clear waters and the yacht experience is one of the highlights of the trip. We set sail for Mnemba island where we have chefs prepare some amazing seafood as we bond over drinks and laughter.
Our experience moves to an all-white dinner party at sunset at Melia Resort, where we enjoy some of the best ngisi (calamari), seagull and maize, mshikaki etc. We end the night with Dj Boddhi Satva, who has us dancing on the beach until 2 am.
Day 3
Day 3We end our love affair with Nungwi and head back to Stone Town and explore some more of it, from visiting the spice farm, walking through the charming old town alleys, and the Amphitheatre where the famous Sauti Za Busara festival happens. The day ends with Brymo doing one last performance and ends our Sail n Sound experience on a high.
Zanzibar has been on my bucket list for the longest time to visit and walk the old narrow streets and immerse myself in the rich history the island has to offer, I’ll definitely be back.
